Fencing Native Remnants and Enhancing Native Remnants
Remnant Vegetation Funding Guidelines have been split into two categories, Enhancing Native Remnant Vegetation and Fencing Native Remnant Vegetation.
Enhancing Native Remnant Vegetation - Remnants may be enhanced by new plantings as corridors between individual trees or between groups of trees (refer to MLRVMP Guide 4.6 Wildlife Corridors).
Fencing Native Remnant Vegetation – Remnants that can be protected in their current state are considered to be groups of trees that have sufficient density as to require no further planting within that group. Fencing should allow for regeneration without the need for further plantings (refer to MLRVMP Guide 6 Land and Vegetation Rehabilitation Techniques).
Species
Only native tree species will be treated as remnants. Species that will be planted as part of enhancing remnants are those that are recommended in the Mid Lachlan Regional Vegetation Management Plan (MLRVMP). Only tubestock are to be planted. Trees need to be ordered 12 months in advance to guarantee supply from nurseries.
Site Preparation (Enhancing Remnants)
The site must be deep ripped and kept weed free for a minimum of 6 months prior to planting order to conserve moisture.
All fences must be erected before trees are planted.
Fencing Requirements
A “standard” fence or one of similar stock proof capabilities must be constructed. A “standard fence” is assumed to be 7:90:30 prefabricated fencing, 1 high tensile barb, 1 steel post every 8 metres, 4 clips/post, 1 in line strainer and 2 end assemblies. Strainers and end assemblies must be of sturdy construction and designed to last.
Funding for fencing is capped at $1,000 per hectare of trees fenced for a “standard fence” or $2 per metre, whichever is less. The Plan will only fund fencing on three sides, those being one long side and two short sides of a rectangle.
Each new tree planted should have a staked tree guard placed around it at planting.
Grazing
Enhancing Native Remnants - The site is to be excluded from stock for a minimum of 7 years, when after inspection and approval by the Implementation Officer it can be control grazed only. This can include temporary shelter for stock in bad weather after shearing or during lambing.
Fencing Native Remnants – These areas may be control grazed only. This can include temporary shelter for stock in bad weather after shearing, the moving of stock or during lambing (refer MLRVMP Guide 7.1 Grazing).
Funding
The incentive provided by the JLWMP is capped at $13 per hectare of Holding, be it for Fencing Natives, Enhancing Natives or New Plantings. That is for a 1000 hectare holding the JLWMP will provide $13,000 towards the cost of the vegetation project.
Funding is available by application to the Implementation Officer, after the landholder has completed the required section of an IDMP or a vegetation project and satisfied all of the funding criteria for the vegetation strategy. Each landholder will, in effect, have a ‘vegetation funding account’ operated by the implementation officer (e.g. Table 1 below), which they can draw down on once their projects are approved.

Funding will still be subject to annual availability and will be approved on a first in best-dressed basis.
Table 2 below outlines the break up of costs between the JLWMP and Landholders. Funding for fencing is capped at $1,000 per hectare of trees fenced or $2 per metre whichever is less. The Plan will only fund fencing on three sides of a rectangle ie one long side and two short sides. Vegetation funding is also available for the purchase of trees, guards and stakes for Enhancing Native Remnants. This funding is capped at $1.50 per tree with a guard and stake.

Landholder Contribution
All other costs associated with a vegetation project, such as ripping, spraying, fence erection, planting, planter hire and labour are to be covered by the landholder and are considered as their contribution to the strategy.
Each case will be judged on its own merits and approved at the discretion of the Implementation Officer and the Implementation Committee.
